Scholarships For African Americans

There are many scholarships and grants available to African American students to help pay for college and other higher educational learning experiences. Below is a partial list of scholarships and grants that are given by businesses, the government, private citizens, schools, churches, and other organizations.

Ron Brown Scholar Program
Type of Award: For full-time undergraduate study at accredited 4-year institution in United States.
Eligibility: Applicant must be African American. Applicant be high school senior. applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Basis for selection: Applicant must demonstrate financial need, high academic achievement, depth of character, leadership, seriousness of purpose and service orientation.
Application requirements: Recommendations, essay, transcript.
Additional information: In addition to financial assistance, scholars get other benefits: summer internships, career guidance, placement opportunities, mentors, and leadership training. Scholarships may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Award is $10,000 per year for four years. Earlier deadline is for those who wish to have their information forwarded to select colleges and scholarship programs.

Black Nurses Scholarship
Type of Award: Scholarship.
Intended Use: For undergraduate or graduate study at post-secondary institution.
Eligibility: Applicant must be African American.
Basis for selection: Major/career interest in nursing or nurse practitioner. Applicant must demonstrate leadership, seriousness of purpose and service orientation.
Application requirements: Recommendations, essay, transcript. Evidence of participation in both student nursing activities and the African-American community.
Additional information: Must be member of National Black Nurses Association and member of local chapter if one exists. Must be currently enrolled ina nursing program and have at least one full year of school left. Must be in good academic standing. Call association for current information on program.

National Black Police Association/Alphonso Deal Scholarship
Type of Award: Scholarship.
Intended Use: For freshman study at 2-year or 4-year institution in United States.
Eligibility: Applicant must be enrolled in high school. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
Basis for selection: Major/career interest in law or criminal justice/law enforcement. Applicant musst demonstrate high academic achievement, depth of character, seriousness of purpose and service orientation.
Application requirements: Recommendations, essay, transcript. Photo of applicant required.
Additional information: Award provides higher education training for the betterment of the criminal justice system. Applicant must be accepted by a college or university prior to date of award.

The BlackNews.com Scholarship Essay Contest
Type of Award: Scholarship.
Eligibility: Applicant must be African American. Applicant be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Basis for selection: Competition/talent/interest in writing/journalism, based on quality, uniqueness and creativity of content in essay.

Eligibility: Applicant must be African American. Applicant be male. Applicant must reside in Texas.
Basis for selection: Applicant must demonstrate financial need and service orientaition.

GM Engineering Scholarship For Minority Students
Type of Award: Scholarship, renewable
For full-time undergraduate study at 4-year institution. Designated institutions: Colleges and Universities approved by LULAC and GM.
Eligibility: Applicant must be African American, Alaska native, Mexican American, Hispanic American, Puerto Rican or American Indian.
Basis for selection: Major/career interest in engineering. Applicant must demonstrate high academic achievement, seriousness of purpose and service orientation.
Application requirements: Recommendations, transcript. Personal statement of no more than 300 words describing professional and career goals.
Additional information: Must be a minority student pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering. Minimum 3.2 college GPA, or 3.5 high school GPA for entering freshmen. Entering freshmen must have minimum 23 ACT score or 970 SAT score. Must maintain satisfactory academic progress to be eligible for renewal. See Website for application. Scholarship recipients may be offered temporary summer or internship positions with GM businesses; however students are not obligated to accept such offers.
