Overnight Success: (Is There Such A Thing?)
by John M. Roberts

If you think that instant success is the norm in business, you are in for a rude awakening.

When a person, company, or brand becomes successful, the first thing that comes to mind is that this must be an overnight success story. There may be such a thing, but contrary to what you think you know about what it took for this person or company to become successful, in most cases, there is much more to their story than you will ever know. It may have taken years to accomplish and there may have been many headaches and heartbreaks along the way.

When a company makes a breakthrough in brand recognition, sometimes people feel that they were there from the beginning and know everything there is to know about the person or business. They feel that it must have been started at that moment they took notice but in fact, many businesses struggle for years before they reach a point in which their product brands become known to the general public. In essence, what you think you see today may be just the tip of the iceberg.

The same can be said about people who struggle for years to forge a career. Singers, actors, comedians, songwriters, artists, restaurateurs, authors, poets, politicians, and other people who become overnight successes after years of hard work perfecting their crafts and trying to get noticed.

Is there such a thing as overnight success? There is, but it's rare. There are instances where an idea takes off and makes an instant impact on the world. But before you call it an overnight success, you must learn who and what it took to succeed. Sometimes it's an overnight success in the way it looks but it may have taken years of thought and planning to make it so.

Many so called overnight successes are filled with side stories such as bankruptcies, foreclosures, and business failures. Overnight success does not mean overnight literally. It means overnight when success finally happens but you have to know and understand the whole story before making an assessment.

Some of the wealthiest people in the country filed bankruptcy, had foreclosures, business failures, and mental and physical breakdowns before they succeeded. Why did they succeed? They had strong convictions, ideas that they believed in, never ending work ethics, and an enduring belief in themselves and/or their products. Once they made the grade, after years of trying and failing, they became successful.

Many people and companies make millions of dollars and never gain facial awareness or they may not become known until something happens that forces them into the spotlight. The brand may become known and the product may have widespread use in homes and offices, but the person, name, or face that is the company may not generate instant name or facial recognition.

Others have instant name brand recognition but struggle to become successful whether overnight or long term. You might know their name or brand but they may not be good at making money. In such a case, it is in the eye of the beholder to call it an overnight success or something entirely different.

The reason most people don't become successful in business is because the give up to easily. They hear about someone else becoming an overnight success so they feel that all it takes is a good dream. Everyone has dreams but dreams of becoming an overnight success is not going to get you anywhere in business.

If you think that instant success is the norm in business, you are in for a rude awakening. It takes an investment of hard work, long hours, money, passion, and a lot of determination to become and remain successful.
