Question: What is petrified wood?

Answer: Petrified wood is derived from trees that died thousands of years ago and were covered by layers of sedimentary rock and fine grains of sand, then immersed for centuries in silica under extreme pressure.

Question: Is petrified wood a gemstone?

Answer: Like pearls, amber, ivory, and coral, petrified wood is an organic gem, not a rock gemstone. It is a biologically mixed, fossilized composition which hardened into a form resembling a stone.

Question: Is jewelry made from petrified wood?

Answer: Although not in large quantities, jewelry is made using petrified wood. Because of it's beautiful colors, it's form, and it's ancient beginnings, petrified wood makes attractive pieces of jewelry.

Question: What colors do you find in petrified wood?

Answer: Petrified wood comes in a variety of colors from light brown to dark brown, gray, red, pink, and yellow. After it is sanded and polished, the colors come through in a brilliant sheen that shines like a true gemstone.

Question: Where is petrified wood found?

Answer: Several countries, Australia, Canada, Argentina, Egypt, Madagascar, Namibia, India, and the United States have deposits of petrified wood.

Question: Where is petrified wood found in the United States?

Answer: In Arizona, there is an area called the "Petrified Forest," a unique setting of beautifully colored ancient petrified wood.The area has been designated a national park and it is illegal for visitors to take the wood away.

Question: Are there other areas in the United States that petrified wood can be found?

Answer: Petrified wood can be found in the states of Nevada and Wyoming, and in small amounts in other states.
