Get Rich Quick
by John M. Roberts

Is there such a thing as getting rich overnight?

Many people start out believing that they can get rich quick but quickly realize that getting rich takes hard work, dedication to an idea, and most importantly, a lot of time. Very few people actually get rich overnight. It takes years and most people who try to get rich never get rich at all.

To get rich quick, you either have to hit the lottery, which won't happen for most people, or if you receive an inheritance, which probably offer better odds than hitting the lottery but still doesn't guarantee a big enough windfall for you to call yourself independently wealthy.

Even if you hit the lottery or inherit a stash of cash, you can't spend it frivolously because it's easy to run through large sums of money very quickly. To prove this point, all you have to do is look at the list of lottery winners, professional athletes, movie stars, people who have inherited a lot of money, many CEO's, company presidents, and other affluent individuals who have ended up broke, bankrupt, or worse.

Most wealthy people start out with money that comes from family resources or from their moneyed connections. As the old saying goes, "it's not what you know but who you know" that is most important in business. Many people can trace their wealth back through several generations of their forefathers. This is sometimes called "old money."

This is not to say that all wealthy people started with a connection to money because many started from scratch, built their businesses from the ground up, and used their work ethic and intelligence to prosper and to maintain their prosperity. "They made their money the old fashioned way, they earned it."

Does luck have anything to do with getting rich? Yes it does. Being in the right place, having the right product, the right skills, meeting the right investors, or cultivating the right friends at the right time have made many people very wealthy, therefore, luck has definitely created an avenue to wealth for many people. But even those who are lucky enough to get rich, it usually takes a lot of time.

For those looking at other peoples' money, wealth seems fairly easy to get. But if you get a chance to ask the rich, if they are honest with you, they will tell you that getting rich wasn't a quick and easy process. What they will tell you is that you didn't see what really happened during the hard times they had leading up to accumlating their wealth. You didn't see them when they were awake all night trying to figure out how they were going to pay their bills. You didn't see them struggling to keep their utilities on or trying to decide whether to pay the mortgage or pay the lease on the office. You didn't see them in bankruptcy court trying to save their business, their home, and their family. All you see is the nice home they live in, the nice car they drive, and the nice clothes they wear but there is much more to it than that.

A lot of business men and women work very hard for years, and in reality, most never get anywhere close to being rich. Some do, however, make large amounts of money in a short period of time but will admit that they didn't get rich overnight. Others build their incomes and assets slowly over time to a level in which they can live comfortably. They are not rich by any stretch of the imagination but they feel blessed to have a business that keeps them financially secure.

Getting rich quick can happen, but for most people, that is simply a dream. Wealth doesn't just appear overnight unless you win big playing the lottery and the odds of that happening is usually a million to one.

Some people spend their entire lives getting involved in one scheme after another hoping that something will pay off big for them. Some even gamble away money that they could otherwise invest and watch grow.

Simply put, if you want to get rich, you have to work hard and make smart investments with the money you have, then learn that patience is the key to success.
