World Suicide Prevention Day

By bringing attention to suicide related issues, many lives can be saved.

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. As an annual event, organizations around the world promote this day to bring attention to the impact that suicides have on everyone. Various activities are held to educate and raise awareness that suicide can be prevented if the right treatment is provided.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), along with many other organizations around the world, work tirelessly to put a spotlight on suicide and to erase the stigma that is associated with it.

They work with mental health organizations, along with psychologists, and sociologists, to find ways to detect and prevent suicide and to understand what causes a person to want to take his or her on life in the first place. They study people with suicidal tendencies to diagnose and understand the warning signs that are often present before a person decides to commit suicide.

Many people suffer from acute bouts of depression, hopelessness, loneliness, and other issues that may cause them to want to end their lives. Bullying has been spotlighted as a reason that many younger people, as well as with some who are older, are committing suicide.

Around the world, suicide is one of the leading causes of death. It is estimated that nearly one million people die each year by taking their own lives. And for each person who dies from suicide, at least another twenty makes an attempt to kill themselves, but fail.

This is a staggering number. It is estimated that the number of deaths by suicide is far greater than deaths attributed to wars and homicides combined.

Suicides and attempted suicides have a large impact on the economy. Billions of dollars are spent each year on deaths and injuries caused by self inflicted wounds. Aside from the economic impact suicides create, it has far reaching social and psychological on a wide range of people, most notably immediate family members, friends, co-workers, and business associates.

World Suicide Day was launched in 2003 as a day to bring attention to one of the world’s largest causes of unnecessary, yet preventable, death.

Most suicides can be prevented if help is provided through detection, understanding, outreach, and support. If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, seek professional help immediately.
