World Braille Day

World Braille Day is celebrated each January 4 in recognition of the birthday of Louis Braille. Born in 1809, Braille is the inventor of what is known as the Braille code.

The Braille code is a series of raided dots and indentations that are used to help blind and visually impaired people read and write by utilizing their sense of touch.

The system was developed by Braille who, at the age of three, lost his sight in an accident. As Braille grew older, he developed a strong desire to read and write.

Until that time, the Hauy system of teaching the bind to read was used by the visually impaired. It was complicated and hard to learn, required a lot of training, and was used to teach the visually impaired to read but not write.

Braille became frustrated with the Hauy system and set about developing a less complicated method for the visually impaired to learn to read, as well as to write.

At the age of 15, he developed the Braille code, an arrangement of rectangular blocks, or raised dots, called cells. The different cells represent alphabets, numbers, and punctuation marks.

With the Braille code, not only can the visually impaired learn to read and write in all languages, they can also understand music compositions, computer technology, and perform mathematical equations.

Without the Braille code, many people would not have had the opportunity to read and write, get an education, or compete in the workforce. It opened a much needed door for millions of blind and visually impaired people around the world.

World Braille Day raises awareness about the great advancement that Louis Braille made to the world.
