International Day Of People With Disabilities

According to the World Health Organization, around 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people, live with disabilities.

December 3rd is International Day Of People With Disabilities. It promotes awareness and understanding of issues related to people who live with disabilities on a daily basis.

The number of people with disabilities may surprise some people because people with disabilities are often shut in. They live in group homes and facilities that care for them. Because you don't see them doesn't mean they are not there.

The types of disabilities that people have range from malady's that are mild and unnoticeable to those that are severe and outwardly pronounced.

People with disabilities are sometimes neglected and treated inhumanely. In some areas of the world, they are left alone to take care of themselves. Although not all people with disabilities are unable to take care of themselves, many are.

The International Day Of People With Disabilities has been promoted worldwide by the United Nations since 1992 in an effort to bring attention to the plight of those who live in areas that may not provide the means for disabled persons to live with dignity and respect.

According to the United Nations, "persons with disabilities do not have equal access to society or services, including education, employment, health care, transportation, political participation or justice.

Evidence and experience shows that when barriers to their inclusion are removed and persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in societal life, their entire community benefits. Barriers faced by persons with disabilities are, therefore, a detriment to society as a whole, and accessibility is necessary to achieve progress and development for all."

The purpose of International Day Of People With Disabilities is to help increase awareness of the positive aspects of the inclusion of disabled persons into the general population. There are many people with disabilities who can have a positive effect on the world around them, take care of themselves, and lead productive lives if they are given the opportunity.
