The Fourth Month Of The Year

April, the fourth month in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of the four months with 30 days, was originally the second month of a ten month year before January and February were added giving the year twelve months.

Called Aprilis by the Romans, it is thought to have come from either one of two possible meanings, the first from the term "to open" and the second from the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite.

In the northern hemisphere, April is associated with Spring, the warming of the weather and the planting season, while in the southern hemisphere, it is associated with Autumn, the cooling of the weather and the time for harvesting crops.

April is the time for birth and renewal:

  • Bees, butterflies, and other insects take flight.
  • Animals awaken from hibernation and have babies.
