Buying And Selling Comic Books

With the popularity of comic book characters, superhero's and villains, in the movies and television, video games, books, imprinted on clothing and other fashions, there is a greater interest in comic books and comic book memorabilia than anyone could have imagined.

Comic book periods: There are several periods that are used to define events and changes that has taken place in comic book history but the dates and years are not all the same, each age having a particular significance, depending invariably on the writers.

  1. Golden Age
  2. Silver Age
  3. Bronze Age
  4. Iron Age
  5. Copper Age
  6. Platinum Age
  7. Modern Age

The market for comic books from all periods is tremendous and you can see the proof in comic book stores, conventions, and especially on the internet. There are literally thousands of sites on the internet that offer a wide variety of comic books and comic book related items for sale, purchase, or trade.

You can find comic books that were printed and published decades ago that are still interesting to read and many have continuing storylines like television soap operas. There are antique and collectible comic book related figurines and other items of value that are always on the market for sale. Some are worth a fortune and the prices keep going up.

If you are interest in buying or selling comic books, there are a number of things to keep in mind.

  • The most prized comic books are the first in a series.
  • The first book that introduced a popular character.
  • The cover should be in near mint or very fine condition.
  • The pages should be clean and crisp, not wrinkled or torn.
  • The edges should be straight, not folded at the corners.

Condition is one of the most important factors when buying or selling comic books. The front and back covers are especially important and should be in very good condition. Comic books are graded as mint, near mint, very fine, fine, very good, good, fair, and poor.

  • Keep comics in tip top condition by sliding them into plastic sleeves with a piece of safe cardboard. Store protected comics upright on bookshelves in a cool dry place.
  • If you must handle comic books, try to do so as little as possible and don't leave them lying around, especially if you have small children, or pets in the house.

If you are looking to buy more recent comics, try a local comic book shop. Stores that specialize in comic books, old and new, are the best places to look if you need a couple of magazines to fill out a particular series.

There are other issues that need to be looked at when buying or selling comic books, comic book related collectibles and antiques. The economy plays a big role in the selling of comic books and comic book collections.

  1. If there is an economic boom, comic books and related products sell at a good pace and prices increase.
  2. When the economy is bad, comic book sales and purchases slow down and prices may drop.
  3. If a movie is released portraying a comic superhero, the value of that particular superhero's comic books and related memorabilia will go up.

Older comic books, especially those in mint or near mint condition are a comic book collector's dream. Internet auctions, private dealers, and conventions, offer the best access to buyers and sellers of older comic books and collectibles.

The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is used extensively by dealers, investors, collectors, and everyday comic book enthusiasts who want and need information about comic books and related collectibles and memorabilia.
