Listen To Uplifting Music

Excerpt from A Date With Jesus by Carla J. Curtis

I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.
Psalm 57:9

Hear this, you kings! Listen, your rulers! I will sing to the Lord, I will sing; I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel.
Judges 5:3

The piano bug first bit me as I watched one of my cousins tinkle away on the ivory keys. Her mother was babysitting me at the time, and afterwards I begged my mom to let me take piano lessons. After much pleading, my cousin became my first piano teacher, and I eventually took lessons from a trained pianist. this was my first experience with learning and understanding the positive effects music can have on the soul.

Over the years it's been reinforced for me just how powerful, therapeutic, and calming music can be and how it feeds the soul. In fact, when I was pregnant with my daughter, playing the piano and listening to gospel music always helped lessen my anxiety and fear about becoming a mother. Ironically, when my daughter was a baby, I would set her in a baby seat when she wouldn't stop crying and begin playing the piano. she would soon stop crying, and eventually a smile would appear across her fat cheeks. I used to get so tickled at her reactions while I played the piano. This will always be one of my fondest memories of her as a baby. Also, my granddaughters love for me to play the piano when I'm in town visiting them and we are hanging out at my parents' home. The expression on my daughter's face as a baby and on my granddaughters' faces definitely reassures me of the positive effects that music can have on people.

During a date with Jesus, I've learned that listening to music is an important ingredient to healing, soothing, and energizing. Listening to spiritual; music has lifted my soul on many days. During those difficult times in my life, while on a date with Jesus, listening to some uplifting music always puts men in the mindset of praise and worship. I would argue that turning on uplifting music makes the time with Jesus even more intimate. For example, lately I've been going through some trying times, and while on a date with Jesus, I've been listening to Kirk Franklin's new CD, The Fight of My Life. I must say that each and every song on this CD has ministered and encouraged me to press on in spite of the circumstances. This CD has served as the icing on the cake many times for me while on a date with Jesus because it's so inspiring and uplifting. Just as this CD and others have been a blessing to me, I'm sure that you, too, can think of some songs that you feel would make your time with God all the more intimate.

Although listening to gospel music always inspires me, classical, jazz, or other beautiful music can be just as uplifting.

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
Psalm 33:1-4

A date can become more intimate when spent at an establishment that plays music. Through the power of music, I have gained clarity, been given answers to prayers, received deliverance from certain issues, and I've even performed a praise dance while spending intimate time with Jesus. With that said, I would recommend that you put on some music during a date with Jesus and sit back, prop up your feet, relax, close your eyes, and block out all worries and concerns to allow the power of music to penetrate your soul.

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.
